Communication happens between humans hundreds of times a day. Are there people in your life that you communicate really well with? Are there people in your life that you have an issue communicating with?
Understanding personal communication styles is extremely important in understanding how and why we have strong communication with some people and not with others. Are we responsive or reserved? Are we assertive or receptive? Do we fall into a Controlling, Analyzing, Advocating, or Facilitating communication style, or are we somewhere in the middle?
Understanding how and why I'm an Analyzer has also helped me better understanding communication styles that are very different than mine - for example, an advocating style. It has also helped me understand the steps that I need to take to move closer to someone with an opposing communication style to myself in order to be more effective.
I think not only could giving a communication style assessment to clients be an effective coaching tool, but I also think having a better understanding of my own style will help me adapt to my clients and their styles as well.
